Page views, the number of site hits per day, unique access to our site…all of things items make a huge impact in our decision process. Whether you are an e-commerce site, professional blogger, or even blogging for the fun of it, knowing your site statistics will guide you daily, monthly, and forecast what to do for the coming year.

Google Analytics is obviously a powerful tool and used by an enormous amount of people. For pre-made web design like WordPress themes, Joomla, and other open source, you will hardly find a module, plugin, or even a pre-installed script that doesn’t have the Google Analytics code ready to be placed. What many don’t realize is that AWStats or Webalizer are equally, if not more powerful than Google Analytics.

My personal favorite is Webalizer. Not to slight AWStats, as it is an incredible tool as well, Webalizer automatically generates and updates your site traffic, usage, page views and much more. Ok, many of you are wondering, “How do I get access to these tools?” and “How easy are they to understand?” Our web hosting company, Host with Support – Advanced Hosting uses a great control panel called ISPConfig. ISPconfig, depending on what version your host provider uses, has AWStats and Webalizer as options by default. (I encourage you to visit their website for more information).

Many web providers also use the popular cPanel. This control panel generally comes with one or the other – AWStats or Webalizer – it’s just that many people don’t know how to activate them, or locate them in their file manager. Just ask your hosting provider if they offer either or both of these features. Once you begin to use them, you will be extremely excited about their accuracy, attention to detail, and quality. The reports come in these easy-to-understand and downloadable image files, and the most advanced and complete reports come in a nice W3C code validated html file, as seen here for the social bookmarking site, bloginteract.com
